What We Love About Schertz

Schertz, Texas is a middle-sized city located across several counties, including Guadalupe, Bexar, and Comal. While in the heart of the greater San Antonio area, Schertz’ origins actually begin in France. Joseph and Anna Schertz, plus six of their ten children, sailed to America. Among their travels, they encountered Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels, who secured over ten acres to the family in exchange for their joining of the colony. The time between the 1850s and 1860s was filled with notable landmark changes in the Schertz settlement, including the purchase of 307 additional acres of land in 1866. As the city grew, agriculture flourished, and townspeople cultivated wheat, corn, oats, and cotton. It was here that Sebastian Schertz built the first cotton gin and later started the first water supply plant in the community. Thanks to the hard work the founders put in, the Schertz’ legacy lives on – and Schertz has certainly come very far since its settler origins. Because of its rich heritage, Schertz stands apart from other neighborhoods by keeping touch with its heritage. Residents regularly embrace it through the celebration of festivals and events unique to this city alone. But don’t let Schertz’ history mask its now-modern touches, like being a major suburb of San Antonio. In fact, the city has grown to be the third largest in the San Antonio-New Braunfels metropolitan area! Schertz boasts a population of just over 40,000.
